Berlin, Competition - 1st Prize (artistic design: struber_gruber) / completed

Embedded in the existing cemetery, the design creates a contemplative place to remember the dead. Like a grave with a headstone and a grave light, we design the area of the urn graves as one large grave; on a wall not far from it, visitors can read the names and dates of birth and death of the people whose ashes have found their final resting place here. The area of the urn graves is bordered by a 25 cm wide strip of architectural bronze, on which it is written in Polish and German who is buried here. Panels of green enamel with white lettering, placed between the asphalt path and the grave, provide information about the historical circumstances of this place. Above the graves, within the bronze rectangle, evergreen ground cover (Vinca minor 'Alba') is planted to create the impression of one large grave. Extending one of the border strips, an L-shaped wall is erected with posts of architectural bronze holding glass panels. On them, the names and dates of the dead can be read. The lettering glows brightly against a dark background as sun and light shine through, because the names form the blank spaces in glass screen-printed in green, while a matte film diffuses the light and gives the lettering volume. To support the intensified efforts since 2015 for a dignified remembrance of the dead, we propose finding a sponsor for each of the dead who will write their name by hand. In this way, at least while writing, a living person remembers a dead person and takes on responsibility in a special way. The resulting handwriting is then transferred to the glass wall as described. Candles can be placed at the foot of the wall. Together with the trees, the wall of names forms a space that leaves enough room for memorial ceremonies. (Excerpt from the explanatory text by struber_gruber)

Excerpt from the jury report:
Prof. Christoph Valentien praised the entries: “It was remarkable to see the high level at which all
entrants engaged intensively with this very sensitive task.
The winning entry stands out for its spatially very clear structure, which finds a dignified solution both for the grave field and for a
new place of assembly.”
